Where fiber makes sense

Fiber optic cable carries data as light through thin strands of glass. It handles much higher bandwidth than copper, runs far longer distances and is not affected by electrical interference – which makes it the right choice for the backbone of a network: the links between your main closet and the closets on other floors, between buildings on a campus, and to areas where copper cannot reach within its 100-meter limit, such as the far end of a warehouse.

Copper stays the practical choice for the last part of the run to desks and phones. A good design uses each where it fits – fiber between the closets, Cat6 or Cat6A to the work areas.

Installed, terminated and tested

We pull the fiber through conduit, innerduct or cable tray, terminate it in fiber enclosures and patch panels, and test it so you know the links are ready before the switches are connected. When you need to extend or repair a link, we handle splicing and troubleshooting as well.

Fiber usually comes up as part of a bigger project – a new building, a warehouse expansion or a server room rebuild. Because we also install the copper cabling and the racks in the closet, the whole network is planned as one system.

“Vulcan's engineers and sales reps are very knowledgeable. You can tell they have been doing IT and phone work for a long time. They fixed our network issues and provided new IP phones for way less than we were paying for local phone service. They also increased our internet speed by switching us to Charter.”

FAQ

Fiber Optic Cabling questions

Do I need fiber or is copper enough?

For desks and phones, Cat6 copper is enough. Fiber is the better choice between closets, between buildings and for runs longer than about 100 meters (328 feet).

Single-mode or multimode fiber?

Multimode is common inside a building over shorter distances; single-mode goes much farther and is used between buildings and for long backbones. We recommend based on distance and the equipment you plan to use.

Can you repair damaged fiber?

Yes. We troubleshoot the link, locate the problem and repair or replace the damaged section.

Do you also install the switches?

We install the fiber, enclosures and patching. Through our managed IT services we can also set up and manage the network equipment.
