Cloud Services: Migration, Management and Storage

Vulcan Telecom helps Birmingham businesses decide what belongs in the cloud, moves servers, files and applications there, and manages the cloud services and their costs afterwards – with backups, because the cloud is not a backup by itself.

Cloud Services – Vulcan Telecom, Birmingham, AL

Not everything belongs in the cloud – but a lot does

Email, files, phone systems and many business applications now run better and cheaper as cloud services than on a server in the closet. Some things – a large CAD archive, software that only runs locally, a slow internet connection – are better kept on site, at least for now. We look at what you have, what it costs and how you work, and give you an honest recommendation.

Moving to the cloud

A migration is planned step by step: what moves first, how long each step takes, what users will notice and how to go back if something goes wrong. We move files to OneDrive and SharePoint, email to Microsoft 365, phones to a hosted phone system and applications to their vendor's cloud version or to a cloud server – usually outside working hours so Monday morning works.

The three kinds of cloud

  • Software as a service (SaaS) – ready-to-use applications such as Microsoft 365 or a cloud accounting program. The vendor runs everything.
  • Platform as a service (PaaS) – a managed platform for running your own application or database.
  • Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) – virtual servers in a data center, for software that still needs a server of its own.

Most small businesses need mostly SaaS and occasionally a cloud server; we help you use the simplest option that works.

After the move

Cloud services need looking after: accounts and permissions, security settings, and costs that creep up as unused subscriptions and storage pile up. We review them regularly. And because deleted files, ransomware and mistakes also reach the cloud, we back up cloud data separately – see backup & disaster recovery.

FAQ

Cloud Services questions

Should we get rid of our server?

Often, but not always. It depends on your software, your files and your internet connection. We assess it before recommending anything.

Is our data backed up because it is in the cloud?

Not necessarily. Cloud services keep your data available, but deleted or encrypted files can be lost. We back up cloud data separately.
